JONG RIM SONG

As a visual artist passionately devoted to painting, my work is a dynamic exploration of color and light, grounded in the textures and rhythms of the natural world. My beadwork began 25 years ago, inspired by the beads I played with in childhood, with the hope of creating large public murals.

In this medium, I start with an abstract design or collage on a wooden panel, which I intricately fill with acrylic beads, crafting pieces that morph in form and hue as the lighting and viewpoint changes. In my paintings, I aim to capture the core of my surroundings—the flux of light and shadow, the vibrant hues of the natural landscape, and the subtle sounds that color silence. My approach involves simplifying these complex interactions into fundamental expressions of movement and emotion, using additional techniques like splattering, decalcomania, bricolage, and collage to build depth and elicit unexpected interactions of color.

Color plays a consistent and pivotal role throughout my work, which is both intuitive and deeply emotional. Each piece begins with a specific mood or emotion I wish to express, guiding my selection of corresponding colors. Through layering and texturing techniques, I build depth and complexity, allowing the colors to interact in unexpected ways. In my work, color transcends mere aesthetic appeal—it serves as the primary medium through which I communicate my innermost feelings and ideas. I am fascinated by the ability of colors to transform spaces and moods, seamlessly transitioning from bold and vibrant to soft and subdued without altering their intrinsic qualities. I dedicate significant time exploring the interplay between different colors, as well as understanding their psychological impact on viewers.

Ultimately, my art is an expression of my life and experiences, reflecting the ever changing world around me. It is an invitation to explore the profound yet subtle impacts of color, light, and texture—a journey I am privileged to share.

In my recent series, I strive to depict the landscapes of the earth and fields as if viewed from the sky above, using vivid and intense color and shape compositions to capture their essence.
